Kaufman’s Game follows Stanley, an unemployed young man with a passion for boxing, who is keen to improve his strength and stamina. When a stranger approaches him outside the gym with the offer of a specially produced steroid, Stanley is drawn into the ever more violent operations of a powerful organisation, unwittingly entering into a series of tests designed to prove his mettle. This is a film about power, determination and being your own worst enemy. It celebrates the archetypes of classic Film Noir, and the dark, conspiratorial storytelling technique of Franz Kafka, but with a contemporary minimalist aesthetic.
“A decent alarm is worth more to a man than solid counsel.” So says Kaufman (Tor Andreas Fagerland), the shadowy figure of the title, who appreciates novice boxer Stanley (a grumpy Jye Frasca) and plots to bring him into his criminal association.
Author/chief Helier Bissell-Thomas packs his film with vile hints, making light of the short activity components to more noteworthy impact. He additionally makes astounding utilization of London as an area, particularly its sparser, regularly more forsaken spaces, which add to the general tone.
The center area is somewhat excessively unwieldy, as the gathering of people sits tight for things to touch off – acquiring that firearm the folder case or the homerun stick in the corridor into play. However it never goes full Danny Dyer, wanting to unquestionably construct its state of mind, utilizing the downplayed exhibitions of its on-screen characters. In comparative movies, Toby Osmond’s medication pushing specialist would be a cartoon distraught researcher, however here he’s delicately talked and attentive. It’s likewise pitiful to hear that Fagerland passed away as of late, having had such an effect.
