I’m reminded of 1989, when three other underwater fantasy/sci-fi/horror films were released around the time of the biggie one – The Abyss. Leviathan, Deep Star Six and Lords of the Deep were all thrown into the market before that superior James Cameron picture swam into theatres in the summer of ‘89.
Well, it remains to be seen if a third, fourth or perhaps additional “damsel in distress/trapped in her overturned vehicle” flicks will soon find release. Last year’s Curve (which we screened at Screamfest – check out our review here) also followed a young beauty stuck inside her totaled vehicle while a crazed madman taunted her.
And here we have Flipped (also known as Blood Rush). I’m not sure who actually came first, but indeed, both Curve and Flippedhave their own unique charms – although they are terribly alike. Why, even the filming locations are strikingly similar.
With echoes from a very varied bag of tricks – from titles like Fight Club, the Stephen King novel Gerald’s Game (a possible film version is somewhere in the ether) some tidbits of Scream and even with a call-out to Cabin Fever, Flipped seems to have gathered inspiration from a number of places. And despite some tepid response from me early on, the film ended with my admiration and praise for many of its pieces.
Stella Maeve (with an impressive resume, including last year’s Dark Summer) plays Nicole Diamond, a successful model who has been recently engaged to her douche-y and abusive boyfriend Scotty Dee (Evan Taubenfeld). On the way to their new (and remote) home, the young couple finds themselves trapped in their overturned car following an accident – far down the hillside of a mountainous rural area in the golden landscape of California. Plenty of circumstances (various cell phone fiascos and other unfortunate twists of fate) keep Nicole from getting help, and so eventually a random and desperate phone call connects her to Casey – a seemingly helpful but possibly sadistic stranger/fan – voiced by prolific actor and Quentin Tarantino regular; Michael Madsen.
Flipped (2015) A famous model, trapped inside an upside-down car, reaches a mysterious man on her damaged cell phone. However, roadside assistance is the last thing on the stranger’s mind. Flipped (USA, 2015) Dir: Harris Demel Starring: Stella Maeve, Evan Taubenfeld, Michael Madsen.
